This Interview was conducted with Matt Schuster, Vice president of Traditional Bowhunters of Georgia
We have two youth trailers fully stocked with bows, arrows, targets and accessories. Our members use these to teach kids (and occasionally adults) about the fun of flinging arrows at churches, outdoor events, scouting events, etc. The kids we reach each year number in the thousands. Of course, we also invite anybody we can get to our shoots and hunts and make our newsletter available to anyone who wants it.
Unfortunately, it is mostly word of mouth or through the internet sites such as tradgang. In the past, we set up at some some large sportsman's shows but the results were not worth the effort because we could not get permission to actually let folks shoot at the events.
Maybe some slight growth. Down here every time we get a convert, we lose someone who saw a big buck at 40 yards and wants to pick up his compound and kill it. Hunting, rather than being a pastime, is more of a sport and business now, dominated by celebrities, media, and new equipment, so unless there is a backlash to this, or some "big-time" celebrity hunters start promoting traditional, I don't see big growth. We had almost 300 members six years ago and probably have 200 now. Many of the missing 100 members still shoot traditional, they just don't join TBG anymore since trad clubs are no longer new and exciting.
Get one friend involved, then another. When the right person gets involved, there is no turning back, it is too much fun and too satisfying.
If the hunt is traditional, I would suggest hogs because of the high rate of success. Otherwise it would be deer or turkeys.
I will try to make this short. I have so many great experiences I will pick one that fits your theme - one of my best friends, Dudley McGarity, and I picked up stickbows at the same time almost 25 years ago. We joined a club of all compound bowhunters and got quite a bunch of grief over our equipment. It was all friendly and we gave as much as we got but we knew the guys did not believe we would be successful. On the opening weekend, I killed two very nice does, and I believe Dudley killed a doe as well. They were the only deer killed on this 4000 acre lease that weekend. Out of that experience, four of the members picked up traditional bows over the next year - that was kind of neat.
Both, but am heading to New Zealand next week with a longbow in hand.
